For twenty years, "search" meant typing a few words into a box and getting back a page of blue links. You'd click through two or three, compare them, and pick one. Answer Engine Optimization is what happens when that middle step — the list of links — starts to disappear.

More people are now asking AI tools like ChatGPT, Perplexity or Google's AI-generated answers a question directly, in plain language, and getting a single response back. Not a list to sort through — an answer, often with one or two sources named. If your business is one of those named sources, you get the customer. If it isn't, you don't get a chance to make your case on page one of the results, because there is no page one anymore.

How is this different from traditional SEO?

Traditional search engine optimisation is about ranking well in a list — the better your position, the more clicks you get, and you're competing with nine other results a person can scroll past. AEO is closer to being interviewed for a single answer. The AI reads across many sources, decides what's accurate and relevant, and picks what to say. There's no scrolling involved, so being third or fourth doesn't help you the way it used to.

What actually makes a business more likely to be the answer?

  • Clear, structured information. AI systems favour content that states facts plainly — what you do, who it's for, what makes you different — rather than vague brand language.
  • Consistency across sources. If your website, reviews, directory listings and social presence all describe you the same way, that consistency reads as credibility.
  • Genuine authority signals. Real proof — case studies, reviews, mentions from others — matters more than self-description, because AI systems are trying to avoid repeating marketing claims as fact.
  • Direct answers to the questions people actually ask. Content built around real questions ("who does X for Y kind of business") tends to get pulled into answers more than generic pages built around keywords.

Does this replace your website?

No — if anything, it raises the bar for it. Your website is still often where the AI is reading from, and it's still where a person lands once they've decided to check you out. AEO isn't a replacement for a good website, brand or reputation; it's what determines whether you get considered in the first place, before someone ever visits.

This is the shift Innovister builds for. It's one of the seven systems we work on with clients, and it rarely works well in isolation — it depends on the brand being consistent and the proof being real. If you want the fuller picture of how the pieces fit together, our What We Do page walks through all seven.
